The Hallway She Was
Born is a series of photographs made in the stairwell of the apartment
I stayed in during a recent trip to Romania (Communist until 1989).
They are primarily intended to be a study of light and form in this
semi-domestic environment. As well as inherently acknowledging the
social context from which they originate, and the general invevitablity
of material decay on the one hand, these kind of images speak very
much about spontenaiety, colour, and the possibility of discovering
the 'beautiful within the ordinary' on the other. The title refers
to the hallway's personality and history, as a physical space we
might occupy.
